For 12 years following was a railroad agent, during which time he held many other public trusts ... During the summer of 1862 he closed up his business and raised a company of volunteers, enlisting as a private in the same company ... was chosen captain of the same company, which was mustered into the military service of the United States as Company H of 20th Regiment of Volunteer Infantry ... was present at the battle of Chancellorsville, May 1, 2 and 3 ... at the battle of Gettysburgh, Penn., July 1, 2 and 3 ... at the six weeks siege and capture of Atlanta ... made the famous "March to the Sea" from Atlanta to Savannah ... the capture of Columbia, South Carolina ... at the surrender of Johnson's army ...
