    ... He served as a private in one campaign under Colonel Webb in 1776, later joined the British and was imprisoned, but was released in 1778 and 'allowed to return home to his father' upon taking the oath of fidelity. On 2 Jan. 1780 he enlisted for three years in the 'Connecticut Line.'
