    Daniel was an energetic, prosperous farmer, a man of wealth and extensive influence and a leading spirit in every good enterpirse of the times. As agriculture was his principal business, he tried one improvement after another, introducing the best seeds ... On another meadow similarly situated, he sowed a quantity in the form of the letters of his name. By the superior verdure and growth the words, Daniel Holbrook, could be read for miles in nearly all directions. His farm was named Happy Valley. He owned not only the valley but hundreds of acres around over the hills ... He was a Colonel in the militia and very active during the Revolutionary War ... He afterward discarded the title of Colonel preferring to be known as Deacon.
