    ... He lived on Great Hill, a part of Derby at that time, in the house built by his father between 1740 and 1745 ... He left the Episcopal Church... at the beginning of the war, because the pastor, Reverend Mr. Mansfield, preached and talked submission to the King of England... Captain John was one of the town's most reliable and trustworthy men..... When building the church at Oxford, he gave the committee liberty to cut any timber of his for its erection, excepting three trees, which they were strictly forbidden to touch. On looking around they found these trees to be just what they wanted and took them expecting to effect a reconciliation with him. They appointed a meeting. John wouldn't attend - "They" had forgotten their honor and he would have nothing to do with them.
